Hog Manure Treatment:  Chatham Kent Hog Farm

Challenge:

Chatham Kent Hog Farm faced severe ammonia (H2S) levels in their barns and below-floor pits, negatively affecting both livestock and workers:
• High ammonia levels caused respiratory issues, including pneumonia in hogs.
• Elevated piglet mortality due to ammonia toxicity.
• Unsafe working conditions due to strong ammonia and H2S odors, making it difficult for staff to work in the barns.

SciCorp Treatment Plan & Execution:

The farm approached SciCorp for an immediate solution to mitigate these health and environmental risks. SciCorp engineers implemented the following plan:
• First 4 weeks: BIOLOGIC™ SEPTIC was added to the wash water at a rate of 1-5 liters per day, which was used to clean pens and ultimately reach the below-floor pits.
• After 4 weeks: The dose was reduced to 2 liters per week for ongoing maintenance.

Success Achieved:

• 89% reduction in ammonia levels, improving air quality and reducing respiratory issues in the hog population.
• Zero piglet mortality during the 12-week trial, resulting in healthier livestock.
• Complete elimination of H2S odors, leading to a more comfortable environment for workers and no complaints from neighbors.
• Enhanced nutrient value of the manure for future use.
• Elimination of surface solids and sludge in the pits, reducing long-term maintenance costs.

Long-Term Benefits:

• Reduced health risks for livestock and workers.
• Eliminated the need for costly lagoon dredging and minimized odors during manure pumping and land application.
• The operation achieved significant improvements in both animal welfare and operational efficiency.

How This Benefits Your Septic System:

BIOLOGIC™ SEPTIC can similarly enhance the performance of your septic system by reducing odors, improving waste breakdown, and preventing sludge buildup, leading to fewer pump-outs and a healthier environment around your home.
