Case Study Summary: Municipal Wastewater Treatment - Hyperion Water
Reclamation Plant, Los Angeles, California

Challenge:

Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant needed to improve the settleability of solids in its primary clarifier, reduce hydrogen sulfide (H2S) levels in biogas, and increase biogas production. Traditionally, the plant used ferric chloride for odor control and solid settling, as well as ferrous sulfate to reduce H2S in the biogas produced by anaerobic digesters.

Solution:

A bench-scale trial was conducted in June 2019 to evaluate BIOLOGIC™ SEPTIC as a replacement for ferric chloride and ferrous sulfate, and to assess its impact on the overall treatment process.

Results:

• 35% Increase in Biogas Production: BIOLOGIC™ SEPTIC boosted biogas production in lab-scale anaerobic reactors by an average of 35% compared to control reactors.
• 55% Reduction in H2S: The product reduced hydrogen sulfide levels in biogas by 55%, significantly improving air quality and reducing odors.
• Improved Settleability: BIOLOGIC™ SEPTIC performed equally well as ferric chloride in promoting settleability in the primary clarifier, maintaining treatment efficiency.

How This Benefits Your Septic System:

For homeowners, BIOLOGIC™ SEPTIC enhances waste breakdown efficiency, reduces odors, and increases overall system performance, much like it did at Hyperion. It ensures fewer pump-outs, improved waste decomposition, and a healthier septic system.
