Agriculture Manure Treatment: Dairy Operations at the Dairy Research and Technology Centre (DRTC)

Challenge:

Manure from 146 Holstein cows at the University of Alberta’s Dairy Research and Technology Centre (DRTC) was leading to high hydrogen sulfide (H2S) levels in the manure collection room and excessive foaming in the storage tanks. This created several issues:

  • Strong H2S odors causing staff complaints.
  • Excessive foaming in the liquid storage tanks during pumping.
  • Frequent pump-outs required to avoid overflow, increasing operational costs.

SciCorp Treatment Plan & Execution:

SciCorp worked with DRTC to implement a trial of BIOLOGIC™ SEPTIC to reduce H2S odors and eliminate excessive foaming. The treatment approach involved:

  • Dosage: 1 liter of BIOLOGIC™ SEPTIC added twice daily to the 300-gallon liquid manure collection tank.
  • The treated liquid was then pumped into 4 x 9,000-gallon storage tanks.

Success:

Over the 124-day trial, significant improvements were observed:

  • H2S levels in the manure collection room and storage tanks dropped from 20 ppm to 0 ppm.
  • Odor complaints from staff were eliminated.
  • Foaming in the storage tanks was completely resolved.
  •  Pump-out frequency was reduced by 50%, resulting in monthly savings of $1,178.

Problems Avoided:

By partnering with SciCorp, DRTC was able to avoid:

  • Health issues and odor complaints from workers.
  • Elevated operating costs due to frequent pump-outs.

Long-Term Benefits:

  • Elimination of odors and foaming.
  • Reduced maintenance costs.
  • Improved working environment for staff.

How This Benefits Your Septic System:

Just like the DRTC’s dairy manure management, BIOLOGIC™ SEPTIC can help your home septic system by reducing odors and sludge buildup, minimizing pump-outs, and improving system efficiency.
