Large Pulp Mill in South America (Kraft Pulp)

Case Study Summary: Industrial Wastewater Treatment - Large Pulp Mill in South America (Kraft Pulp)

Challenge:

One of the largest kraft pulp mills in South America faced multiple challenges as production demands increased, pushing the wastewater treatment system beyond capacity. Key issues included:

  • Significant odors from the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), leading to neighbor complaints
  • Inefficient effluent treatment, particularly in removing phosphorus (P) and chemical oxygen demand (COD)
  • Underperforming biological reactors, failing to meet strict environmental discharge standards

Solution:

SciCorp engineers collaborated with the pulp mill’s wastewater team to conduct a full-scale, three-month trial using BIOLOGIC™ SEPTIC. The trial involved:

  • Setting up two dosing points in the WWTP with continuous metering pumps
  • Weekly performance assessments to optimize treatment outcomes.

Results:

  • Significant Odor Reduction: Drastic reduction in H2S and mercaptan odors throughout the plant, especially in secondary clarifiers and belt presses.
  • Improved Effluent Quality:

                ◦ 36% increase in phosphorus removal efficiency
                ◦ 23% increase in COD removal efficiency

  • Increased Capacity:

                 ◦ 25% increase in WWTP treatment capacity, processing up to 150                                          tons/day without needing additional aeration
                 ◦ 10% improvement in reactor efficiency

  • Reduced Waste: 10% reduction in biosolids produced
  • Carbon Footprint Reduction: The trial also resulted in a reduced environmental impact.

How This Benefits Your Septic System:

BIOLOGIC™ SEPTIC offers the same benefits for residential septic systems, improving waste breakdown, reducing sludge, and controlling odors. This leads to fewer pump-outs, better system efficiency, and a cleaner environment around your home.
