Applying BIOLOGIC™ SEPTIC to reduce odors and H2S levels at a landfill.

Large Scale Landfill Odor Control: Reliable Landfill, Livonia, LA

Challenge:

Reliable Landfill, operational since 1996, began receiving persistent odor complaints in late 2016, specifically related to high levels of hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Despite initial attempts to control the odors—including rejecting certain waste streams, applying soil/mulch cover, and installing a vapor-driven odor neutralizing system—the issues persisted, leading landfill management to seek SciCorp's expertise.

Treatment Plan & Execution:

SciCorp engineers developed a solution using BIOLOGIC™ SEPTIC. After assessing the site, they conducted a small-scale test, spraying BIOLOGIC™ SEPTIC directly onto the working face and high H2S zones of the landfill. Upon successful results, the approach was scaled up to treat the entire 3-acre working face and areas with soil/mulch cover.

Results:

  • H2S levels in the highest concentration areas (>50 ppm) dropped to 0 ppm after application.
  • Significant reductions in H2S were observed in all treated areas.
  • The waste excavation zone, previously exhibiting readings of >50 ppm, saw reductions to below 5 ppm after treatment.
  • Following full-scale application, no further odor complaints were reported.

Issues Avoided:

  • Regulatory action due to odor complaints
  • Worker safety issues related to H2S exposure
  • Damage to the landfill's reputation in the community
